NGCC is pleased to announce the north wing and outdoor rinks of the Norberry site have been dedicated in honor of two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion hockey player Sami Jo Small. The occasion was marked with a dedication ceremony on Sunday, May 10th. Sami Jo grew up in the Pulberry neighborhood and played hockey from an early age for the former Norberry Royals and other teams in St. Vital. She is a co-founder of the Canadian Womens Hockey League and currently plays for the Toronto Furies. Over the years she has earned additional honors in other sports and is a graduate of Stanford University. In concert with the dedication, St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes announced major funding of $64000 for replacement of the boards and players' box for the north rink at the Norberry site, as well as additional signage. Lighting for both rinks had previously been replaced at a cost of $60000. Riel MLA Christine Melnick presented Small with a copy of the Member's Statement she read Friday before the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, and spoke about efforts being undertaken to mark the important contribution girls' and womens' hockey has made to sport in St. Vital.
